Ambiguity in Political Ideology: Aboriginality as Nationalism

Abstract
The construction of aboriginality as a basis for political action resembles nationalism in its emphasis on an idealized past, spiritual superiority and future liberty. Aspects of nationalism which also relate to aboriginality include its development out of imperial ideology, glossing over of internal differences during the struggle for independence and the confusion of race and culture. Examples from Irish nationalism, Indian nationalism and colonial Australian nationalism provide a framework for exploration of the political ideology of aboriginality.
