Abstract
The article examines how the concepts of wealth and poverty are linked with perceptions and recollection of place, using the Toba of Argentina as an illustrative example. The idea that wealth is something alien and unachievable to the Toba is explored through social memory and perceptions of their own conditions as those of necessity rather than extravagance.
