This chapter introduces Amartya Sen’s capability approach along with several criticisms. It begins with an example of his theory at work in a small village in Pakistan, where a women’s organization requested funding from Oxfam and was able to start a business and subsequently flourish. The rest of the chapter begins the work of identifying, obtaining and processing the information that is required to implement the capability approach in the assessment of poverty reduction.
