Abstract
This essay presents a different view of economic development, based on the theory that it is a field of its own, and that it is one of the three fundamental dimensions of economic analysis. According to the author, the theory of economic development is concerned with the development of social and technical factors that ultimately determine the set of economic opportunities available to nations, regions, firms, organizations, and individuals, a topic still in its infancy in the academic realm. The author’s purpose here is to demonstrate the real limitations of economic analysis in economic development and strategic decision making so that this understanding will lead to better economic theories in the long run.
