Abstract
This article examines the relationship between inequality and economic growth. Using data from the 1970s and 1980s, the correlation between the stages of economic growth and the income shares of the rich and the poor are estimated. The authors conclude that, on average, there’s little movement toward equality seen accompanying the process of growth. Additionally, in the 1980s structural adjustment policies gave many countries an additional push toward inequality.
