Toward a Theory of Choice: Socially Embedded Preference Construction
Author(s)Dietz, Thomas; Stern, Paul C.
AbstractA new model of individual choice consistent with the properties of evolved human cognitive abilities is proposed. It approximates reality more closely since it is rationally bounded, uses classification-and-rule logic, considers values as partially endogenous, allows for ‘hot’ cognition and considers social influences on choices and preferences. It recognizes egoism and altruism as the most salient value orientations in a majority of choices.
