From Parents to Children: Intra-Household Altruism as Institutional Behavior
Author(s)Purkayastha, Dipankar
AbstractThe role of parental nurturing has not received adequate emphasis in economics. Not-withstanding a society’s complementary investment in schools, healthcare, and other vehicles of human capital formation, very few will contest the fact that children receive a significant part of their human capital from their parents. The paper is organized as follows. First, I critique the neoclassical theories on human capital formation from an intra-household perspective, and, second, I discuss the role of intra-household institutions. A final section summarizes and concludes the paper.
