Abstract
This paper applauds the paradigm shift that is occurring to broaden economics into the psychological sphere through the discussions of Gross National Happiness. It provides an overview of Buddhist philosophy in regard to suffering and happiness, noting its emphasis on spiritual rather than material development and contrasts this with classical economic theory. The paper explores the flaws inherent in Gross National Product and traces how spiritual traditions are currently challenging the dominant economic paradigm. Shifts towards “humanised economics” and corporate responsibility are noted. Finally, the paper proposes some ideas for a Gross National Happiness index guided by insights from both modern science and Buddhism.
