What is Rational?
Author(s)Etzioni, Amitai
AbstractRationality, in the neoclassical paradigm, is tied to the individual following his or her self-interest. The author argues that one may serve the commons rationally and that there is no necessary connection between rationality and self: an activity that serves the I, the We, even Them, any activity – including one that seeks to advance the commons – can be examined as to its degree of rationality. This chapter demonstrates that rationality in all activities entails deliberations and that it is not automatic or non-conscious.
