There is surely no more important consequence of “free trade” and the new rules of economic globalization than its effects on food production and distribution. Small farmers are rapidly disappearing, poor countries are getting hungrier, and pesticide-intensive monocrop production is increasing. Meanwhile, small farmers are now squeezed between the corporate monopolies that control seeds and fertilizers, and the ones that the farmer must sell to at an unsatisfactory price. Often it’s the same TNC at both ends. In this chapter, Karen Lehman and Al Krebs report on the control of the world’s food supply.
