Toward an Equitable, Inclusive and Sustainable Agriculture: Mexico’s Basic Grains Producers Unite

Abstract
In Mexico, the production of basic grains is strategically important. One single product – corn – is the foundation of the national culture, the key component in the Mexican diet, and the principal source of livelihood for more than four million families. The authors discuss “free-trade” policies that have destroyed the livelihoods of an estimated 300,000 corn farmers and the response to the crisis produced by these policies – thousands of small and medium-size producers across the country created the National Association of Commercializing Enterprises (ANEC) to defend their livelihoods and create more equitable, inclusive and sustainable agricultural markets.
