Abstract
From 1999-2000 the repression against the Organization of Peasant Ecologists’ fight to save their forests in Guerrero gained international attention. For many environmental groups, it became a symbol of local resistance to environmentally destructive forces unleashed under the terms of trade liberalization. The authors write that to really understand the peasant ecologists’ struggle in the southern state of Guerrero, it is necessary to step back and analyze the history of a region coveted for its abundant natural resources, exploited by extractive industries, and plagued by social instability.
