Lessons Learned: Civil Society Strategies in the Face of Economic Integration
Author(s)Wise, Timothy A.; Salazar, Hilda; Carlsen, Laura
AbstractConclusions. The case studies presented in the volume offer a variety of recent experiences with economic integration. They touch on labor, agriculture, environment, the role of the state, and the impact of international trade agreements. These cases offer important lessons about the impacts of the current integration process in Mexico. The experiences demonstrate the need to empower both the national governments and local communities to manage the process of economic integration. An enormous distance remains between the visions of the government and the multilateral development institutions. The chapter examines the implications for the role of the state and concludes with lessons for future trade agreements.
