Abstract
The conflict and contestation over natural resources in South East (SE) Asia or any of its major sub-regions such as the lower Mekong sub-region cannot be explained by one factor alone. Kamal Malhotra argues that it is largely the product of the interplay between two major political economy phenomena, i.e. the different economic development models pursued in SE Asia and the particular manifestation of some key aspects of current dominant patterns of globalization (e.g. the privatization of infrastructure provision, trade liberalization, etc.) in the region.
