Abstract
Historians have traditionally claimed that Andean peasants were not involved politically and thus, did not contribute to the movement towards capitalism in Latin America. The article examines how Andean peasants working in haciendas participated politically through local and traditional rituals, such as festivals, crop harvesting and contests. It examines the conclusions of experts in this field, such as Erwin Greishaber and Rafael Baraona who participated towards a 1966 Comite Interamericano de Desarrollo Agricola report on the Ecuadorian agrarian structure.
