Comfort Versus Pleasure
Author(s)Scitovsky, Tibor
AbstractEconomics is a field which studies the allocation of scarce resources and services. In many cases, economics serves as a source of satisfaction for people, albeit a relatively unimportant one in comparison to other sources of pleasure. This chapter seeks to discover why it is that some satisfactions depend on economic activity while others do not and are kept out of the market altogether. Major topics analyzed include self sufficiency, mutual stimulation, market goods and services, external benefits and external nuisances, non market goods and services, and work as self-stimulation.
