Abstract
This selection is part of a rigorous reconstruction of a modern form of utilitarianism and an examination of its implications for such economic questions as equity, distribution, and social choice. The chapters selected here explain how these ideas lead to a critique of the principle of Pareto optimality and to a utilitarian basis for egalitarianism.
