Global History and the Third World
Author(s)Buultjens, Ralph
AbstractGlobal history will require, among other things, two important components – major Third World content and new ways to evaluate this content in relation to its global value. The size of the Third World (encompassing over 70 percent of the earth’s population and over 50 percent of its land area) gives it considerable significance. Beyond the weight of statistics, this significance is substantially enhanced by the Third World’s history. The long and rich experiences of these regions, especially their contribution to planetary progress, have largely been neglected. Thus, the development of a new cosmology of history requires uncovering much of the Third World’s history and integrating it into a global history. In doing this and evaluating the result, we will likely develop the consciousness that our new globalized civilization needs.
