Carpet Manufacturers of Iran in the Nineteenth Century
Author(s)Seyf, A.
AbstractCarpet manufacturing in Iran during the 19th century developed largely in response to the growing market in Europe and the United States. Although production meant that the area was one of the few expanding areas in the nonfarming economy, it remained domestically based and heavily reliant on child labor. As a result, the sector could not make any contribution to the development of modern industry in Iran. The nature of carpet manufacturing, however, meant that it was not subject to the hindrances of capital and machinery shortages that plagued the rest of the economy.
