Abstract
Examines the Charoen Pokphand Group, a family-controlled agribusiness conglomerate in Thailand, which successfully sustained family control by bringing diverse talent into the managerial ranks and by fostering highly developed skills in family members. These data challenge the view that enterprises necessarily evolve into managerial firms as scale grows. Among later developers, success is not just the result of effective state policies but also the result of the reform of family businesses that become responsive to global market forces. The author dubs such firms “modern” family enterprises.
