Adam Smith’s Moral Philosophy: The Role of Religion and its Relationship to Philosophy and Ethics in the Evolution of Society
Author(s)Evensky, Jerry
AbstractMoral philosopher Adam Smith posited that religion and philosophy are key in creating a society’s structure. Both result from thought, with religion providing stability through the acceptance of a perceived order, and philosophy providing tranquility through the acceptance of an understanding of value. While religion fosters the division of labor, philosophy offers mental occupation as an alternative from the work of the physical world.
