Empire Forestry and the Origins of Environmentalism

Abstract
The article tracks the emergence and development of environmentalism from colonial forestry practices in India, which were introduced into Canada and then entered the US. The concept resulted from compromises between laissez-faire exploitation of forest resources, fire protection objectives, and preservationist ideology.
