Abstract
Discusses the ecological and human consequences of deforestation in the Moluccan Islands, eastern Indonesia, using the Nuaulu people of Seram to demonstrate how the causes of deforestation, including cash-cropping, logging, and intensification of subsistence agriculture, interact. The Nuaulu example also demonstrates that the form, rate, and consequences of deforestation change over time and that patterns of responses among local populations thus cannot be expected to remain constant.
