Abstract
Immediately following the end of the war, the United States began a process of expedited democratization of western Germany in clear contradiction of their stated goals of rendering Germany powerless and punishing the guilty. They did this because they were convinced that only through democratization would Germany adopt the political systems of the United State, reduce the need for American manpower, and that democracy was the only acceptable way to recreate the centralized German political structure integral to the advancement of the German economy.
