“A Pope from a Far Country” relates the chronology of Karol Wojtyla’s ascent to the papacy after the death of John Paul I. The chapter begins by establishing the context for John Paul II’s papacy, describing the conclusion of Vatican II and its reforms, and the Cold War era of world politics and its effects on the Catholic Church. John Paul II would become the first non Italian Pope in over four hundred years.
