An Idealist and a True Believer in Spite of Everything: The Return of Alexander Dubcek from Obscurity to Prominence
Author(s)Hetnal, Adam A.
AbstractReviews the mercurial career of the Czechoslovak Communist leader Alexander Dubcek. Appointed First Secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party in January 1968, Dubcek’s effort to introduce democratic reforms in Czechoslovakia was soon ended by a Soviet-led invasion. In 1989, however, in the aftermath of the events of the so-called “Velvet Revolution,” Dubcek was returned to power as speaker of the Czechoslovak National Assembly.
