Abstract
George II of Greece was recalled from exile in 1935. At first, he attempted to rule as a constitutional monarch, but found this to be impossible. In 1936 he appointed General John Metaxas prime minister. Metaxas became dictator and ruled until his death at the height of Greek resistance against Italy. After his death, the king became the sole symbol of Greece, thus bearing the odium for Greek defeat.
