Abstract
The literature on Spain’s transition from dictatorship to democracy consistently emphasizes structural aspects, such as the economy, the army, the work force, and the Church. Little attention has been given to the role of the king, including his political career, beliefs, and personality. Designated by Franco on July 22, 1969, to be his successor, Prince Juan Carlos took power immediately after Franco’s death on November 20, 1975. Numerous studies appeared on the constitutional and political issues of this succession, and during this crucial period the king worked to consolidate the throne and stabilize democracy. In fact, much of the legitimacy of his reign came from the king’s role in the democratizing process.
