Abstract
Discusses the relationship of the Sudanese Communist Party and the government of Jaafar Nemery in the period 1969-71. Nemery formed an alliance with the Communists because no other alternative existed. His regime was too weak to do without the support of the Communist Party that controlled the trade unions, had influence in the army, and had the support of various popular organizations. On July 19, 1971, army units seized power and overthrew the Nemery regime. As a result of a countercoup, Nemery regained power on July 22. Although the Sudanese Communists failed in their support of the coup of July 19, they denied Nemery any assistance in forging a dynamic ideology and prevented him from acquiring total hegemony.
