Global Arrogance and the Crisis of Hegemony
Author(s)Leatherman, Janie
AbstractThis introductory chapter sets out the analytical approach that underpins the rest of the volume. First, I examine the nature of the crisis of hegemony, including runaway globalization, the flaws of global governance, and its democratic deficits. Second, I argue that as hegemony declines, its democratic deficits are masked by global arrogance. Third, I elaborate on the myths through which global arrogance is perpetuated, and the challenges to each of them. I conclude with an overview of democratic possibilities and the dangers of replicating global arrogance followed by a synopsis of the chapters in the volume.
