Abstract
Shirin takes aim at the paradigms traditionally used to understand ethnic coexistence and assimilation. By studying ethnic cohabitation in Central Asia she finds that the traditional notion of a melting pot is false. The inability of peace assimilation is general obstructed by the political goals of politicians, who are able to successfully use ethnic tensions and xenophobic sentiments to assume civil power.
