Reinventing (French) Universalism: Religion, Humanitarianism and the French Doctors
Author(s)
Taithe, Bertrand
Abstract
Investigates the new views on humanitarianism – associated with French universalist and internationalist discourse – of the founders and members of two French medical associations, Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) and Médecins du Monde (MDM), during their most important period from 1970 to 1993. The reflective and philosophical writings of the initiators of the MSF and MDM are used in tracing how the organizations became increasingly involved with the media and how the founders were eventually drawn into politics.
