The European Free Trade Association: The Problems of an All-European Role
Author(s)Neumann, Iver B.
AbstractExamines possible roles for the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) developing during Central and Eastern Europe’s turn away from Communist rule during the 1980’s. In light of the former Soviet bloc’s embrace of capitalism, the EFTA could become either a buffer between the European Community (EC) and the Soviet Union or a “waiting room” for EC applicants. The article describes the low-key approach to all-European affairs taken by the EFTA during the late 1980’s.
