NGO Development in Central and Eastern Europe: An Empirical Overview
Author(s)Toepler, Stefan; Salamon, Lester M.
AbstractExamines the roles played by nongovernmental organizations (NGO’s) in the development of Central and Eastern Europe after the end of the Cold War. Both in terms of employment of the population and development of arts and recreation institutions, NGO’s have played an important role in the development of the region. Employing people through professional associations and unions, as well as in environmental and advocacy groups, NGO’s have contributed to the formation of new civil societies in the aftermath of the collapse of communism.
