Relationships of Interest Groups to Government and Political Parties in South Korea
Author(s)Yu, Suk R.
AbstractIn common with other developing nations, the emergence of interest groups in South Korea was the result of government initiative, and the welfare of interest groups has been closely related to government policy. In general the Japanese (1910-45) and the New Democratic Party (1964- ) regimes exerted extremely close control; the Liberal Party government (1948-60) was somewhat more liberal and the Democratic Party (1960-61) exerted the least control. Based on a 1973 survey of Korean labor union officials, teachers, industrialists, businessmen, agricultural trainees, and students concerning the relationship of their interest group to the government during four regimes since 1910 and on English and Korean secondary sources.
