Making Place at the United Nations: Indigenous Cultural Politics at the U.N. Working Group on Indigenous Populations
Author(s)Muehlebach, Andrea
AbstractIn 1982 the United Nations (UN) Working Group on Indigenous Populations (WGIP) was established by the UN Economic and Social Council (UNESCO), and it has existed as the only world organization devoted to issues related to indigenous peoples. In 2000 the UN General Assembly created a new body, an intact forum of indigenous peoples, which will serve as an arm of UNESCO and use the valuable discourse of the WGIP in policymaking on the international rights of indigenous peoples.
