The Rise of Political Islamism in Saudi Arabia
Author(s)Dekmejian, R. Hrair
AbstractIslamic forces became a political force in Saudi Arabia after the Gulf war, resulting in the alienation of the monarchy and the adoption of the Basic Law of Governance according to Islamic tenets. The growth of political Islam started with the formation of the Committee for the Defense of Legitimate Rights and the results Consultative Council set up by King Fahd. The council’s literate members declared that Islamic religious laws were not violated, thereby providing the rallying point for political Islam.
