Abstract
After gaining independence, Ghana moved toward liberalization and democracy with a considerable degree of success despite several political crises. The population largely divided into populist and liberal factions, each combining capable leadership with some capacity for effective organization. Ghana enjoyed a virtual two-party system, which helped bring stability to the country during periods of uncertainty, because when the ascendant group ran into trouble the other faction was able to offer alternatives that forestalled a vacuum of power and consequent chaos. Over time, the factions coalesced into the New Patriotic Party and the New Democratic Congress.
