Consumerism Then and Now
Author(s)Miles, Steven
AbstractConsumerism as a Way of Life discusses the sociological significance of consumerism therefore it emphasizes consumerism as a lived experience. It puts forth a critical analysis of the everyday ways in which consumerism effects out lives by looking at key questions and debates in different areas of life impacted by consumerism: design, space, technology, fashion, popular music, and sport. This piece argues that consumerism is embedded into modern life. It examines why consumption is an important area to research proposing that consumer goods and services might have a significant role to play in determining who we are and how we construct our social lives. The difficulty of defining the relationship between consumerism and consumption is considered as well as the manner in which the consumer society emerged. The politics of consumerism and consumerism as social, economic and cultural change are also explored.
