Is Female to Male as Nature Is to Culture?
Author(s)Ortner, Sherry B.
AbstractThe universal aspects of male-female differences across cultures is a problem for modern anthropologists and sociologists. The rise of male domination in every society is further troubled by the unique features of each society, such that across cultures women are observed with more or less social status and power. This paper is primarily concerned with the universal devaluation of women. It depends not upon specific cultural data but rather upon an analysis of “culture” taken generically as a special sort of process in the world.
