Cultured into Crisis: The Arts Council of Great Britain
Author(s)Harris, Jonathan M.
AbstractSubject to sharp criticism in recent years over its organisation, location and policy decisions, from both the left and right in Britain, each with their own agendas for reform or transformation and from artists who see themselves as the clients of the organisation, the Arts Council has faced and continues to face a crisis of legitimacy regarding its role and value in contemporary society. This chapter examines some of the roots of the crisis and considers recent attempts by Council officials concerned with visual arts to meet the criticisms leveled at the organisation.
