In Search of Relevance: Science Centers as Innovators in the Evolution of Museums
Author(s)Koster, Emlyn H.
AbstractMuseums are increasingly being used more and more by communities in educational capacities. No longer stuffy institutions, the author addresses the subject of how museums have increased their societal context. Implicit in her essay is the view that museums need new performance measures. She advises it would be well to expand the view of science centers as cultural institutions, in that scientific research and technological heritage, as well as the philosophy that shapes the present and prospective impact of science and technology on individuals and societies, are seen as equally integral dimensions of culture.
