An Introduction to Buddhist Archaeology

AbstractThis introduction provides background information necessary for understand any discussion of Buddhist archaeology and philosophy. The origin and general concepts of the Buddhist religion as they affect material culture are set out. The spread of Buddhism is briefly described through Sri Lanka into Southeast Asia, and through Afghanistan into East Asia. The origin of Siddhartha and the conception of the Buddhist philosophy are discussed, as are the interactions that Buddhist philosophy had with the Indian metaphysical system that eventually became known as Hinduism.
