Abstract
Discusses the peace initiatives of Chechen president Aslan Maskhadov and the Chechen parliament toward Russia and Chechen requests of the European and global communities to intervene following the 1994 Russian invasion of Chechnya. International dialogue finally began in December 1999 with the European Union summit. Requests by the Chechen government for unconditional political dialogue with Russia have continued.
