AbstractThe two phases of expansion of the Italian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries are discussed. Italian colonies in North and East Africa and the methods by which they were acquired are reviewed. Some of the motives for the conquest of these lands are explored as well as future interests held by Italy at the time of writing.
