Abstract
Brian Mulroney’s Conservative government in Canada imposed economic sanctions against South Africa in 1985 to protest the latter’s apartheid system. The author examines the motivations behind the Mulroney government’s policy, compares Canada’s South Africa policy during 1985-90 with that of other Western nations, and speculates on the effect of Canada’s policy on events in South Africa.
