Limits to Hegemonic Influence in the Organization of American States

Abstract
Examines thirty cases of regional conflict management by the Organization of American States between 1948 and 2002 to assess the influence of the United States, the organization’s most powerful member. The article explores the effect of structural, normative, internal relational, and environmental factors on US influence from a sociological perspective, concluding that Washington’s power was limited and that institutional factors also affected decision-making.
