Discounting the Future
Author(s)Broome, John
AbstractShould future goods be discounted? Should benefits in the future count for less in our planning that will come in the present or near future? I am not thinking of the plans made by an individual on her own behalf, but of plans made on behalf of the public as a whole, particularly by governments. Should future goods be discounted by public authorities in their planning? This article attempts to explain to philosophers what economists are doing when they discount the future and why they are doing it.
