The problem of rainforest destruction is set within a broad ethical context. The conflict between environmentalism and Third World reality is highlighted. The author assumes a theoretical position of intrinsic value, but recognizes the need for such practical compromise solutions as truly sustainable forestry. He concludes that increased research in sustainable forestry needs to be conducted immediately, with the objectives of human well-being and biodiversity clearly in mind.
