In this speech, King explains the philosophy of nonviolent resistance, and the difficulty he had in explaining it to people. He cites the obstacles which included explaining that nonviolence is not cowardice, that the nonviolent register does not seek to humiliate or defeat the opponent, that it is not intended to attack individuals but the system, and that nonviolence is also an internal matter. He presents the concept of “agape” love, that stands at the center of his movement, as understanding, creative, redemptive good will for all men. Finally he calls on his audience to be “maladjusted” to the certain ways of society and to go out and create change.
